Spaniard!

Thank goodness for Ben.  In Japan, he found us Ninja training, and here in Rome, he found us Gladiator school!

We started with some history about Roman soldiers and Gladiators, including a walk through a small museum of armour.  I was a bit worried, because throughout the explanation, both kids said they didn’t want to do the training, and Connor was having trouble paying attention.

But then it was time to out on our Gladiator tunics, and suddenly, everyone was excited.

Our Gladiator coach started us off with a few laps around the training course and some push ups (yes, mom, even me).

After we’d proven our mettle, we got training swords.  Woo hoo!  We learned how to attack and defend – head, neck, legs.

And now, it was time for the part everyone had been waiting for – sparing!  Sophie and Connor went first.  It was a battle to the death…

Followed by the most anticipated match of the day – me vs. Ben.  I don’t have any pictures of that, but suffice it to say, it was epic.

The kids then each took a turn fighting mommy and daddy in friendly matches.

The session wrapped up with a ceremony where we were presented with our certificates and new Roman names.

And that, my friends, is how you become a Gladiator.
